In September 2014, POSA Trust and SAMPRA jointly announced that an agreement had been reached between the two organisations on the sharing of Needletime Rights royalties between record companies and performers featured in the tracks. The agreement stipulates that Needletime Rights royalties will be shared equally between the record company that produced the sound recording and the performer(s) featured in the tracks, unless if a contract exists, between the record company and the performer, that stipulates a different share split.
POSA did the first distribution, for 2009 royalties, on 23 December 2014. The 2010 and 2011 royalties were distributed on 16 and 19 January 2015 respectively. POSA intends distributing the 2012 royalties in early February 2015. The dates for the 2013 and 2014 royalties will be set as soon as the money and relevant information have been received from SAMPRA.
Sibongile Khumalo, the Chair of the POSA Board of Trustees, has said that the payment of Needletime rights royalties heralds new a beginning in the administration of music rights in South Africa since it is the first time Needletime rights royalties are paid to recording artists for the usage of their recorded performances.
